Chronicling the adventures of the B's

Falling out…

by Dave

…of bed. In the month that Eli has been in his ‘big boy bed’ he has only fallen out of bed 3 times. He has fallen out of bed 2x at home and once at Gramma and Grampa’s house. Although the fall from the bed at Gramma and Grampa’s house is a lot shorter and softer than at our house, he still woke up from it. He just fell out of bed yesterday morning at 5:30am. We did a quick diaper change, gave him a sippy cup of milk, I snuggled with him for about 20 minutes and put him back to bed fully asleep. He slept until after 9am.

We enjoy waking up to the pitter patter of his feet running up and down the hallway. One day we woke up to Eli make laps up and down the hallway, he was collecting his blocks and putting them in his bed. Now he stands in our doorway saying, ‘mom. dad’. He’s a cute kid!

I started back to work this week, which has been a huge change for Eli and I. Dave said after breakfast Eli ran back to our bedroom yelling ‘mom’ trying to find me.

So, God loves us…

Today on our way to church Dave noticed he needed to get gas in his car, we made plans to stop on our way home. After church we decided to go visit our friend, Morgan Sheesley, in the hospital before heading home (please visit his caringbridge site to pray for him and his family, http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/morgansheesley).  We had a great visit with Morgan, he and Dave were able to swap stories about living with Crohn’s/Colitis. Eli and I spent some time wandering and playing in the halls.

As we were leaving the hospital we once again noticed the tank was getting empty but were hopeful we would have enough to get to the gas station. We were a mile from the gas station when the car stopped running, the car coasted about another 100 feet before coming to a complete stop. Dave decided to walk up to the gas station while Eli and I hung out in the car (Eli was napping) with all the windows down and a slight breeze coming through the windows. Mind you, it was very warm outside and in my current condition, I was over heating very quickly and had nothing to drink (I drank all my water). As soon as Dave started walking and cars were zooming past us, I started praying. I prayed that someone would be ever so gracious and stop to give him a ride. Dave made it about 30 feet down the road and a car stopped, the gentleman offered to give him a ride to the gas station. Once at the station Dave bought another gas can (ours was at home) and some gas. The gentleman was so gracious and waited for Dave to buy the gas can, fill it up and gave him a ride back to our car. An adventure that could’ve taken a hour, give or take a few, (Eli and I could’ve been way overheated or worse), only took a matter of minutes due to a wonderful, gracious gentleman. We pray a blessing over the random gentleman and his family!!

Dave said several times that God was watching over me, the baby and Eli. He said the 2-mile round trip walk would not have bothered him but he knew we would be the ones suffering. Again, we pray a blessing on that kind gentleman and his family.

The latest…

by Dave

I just realized its been a long time since I last update all of you on the happenings of the Burlingame clan.

Eli…is now well adjusted to his new bed. He does a great job of staying in bed and has only fallen out two separate times (once at our house and once at Grampa and Gramma’s house). I have to laugh, a few times I’ve needed to get the pack n’ play out for other kiddos to sleep in and Eli gets mad. He must think it is for him to sleep in. It has been fun for us to see his language (talking/signing) abilities take off and we really enjoy communicating with him now that we can understand him. Eli LOVES LOVES LOVES to watch some signing DVDs we have on loan from Gramma P. called, ‘Signing Time’ (can be found at http://www.signingtime.com). Lots of verbal language and lots of sign language has been picked up by both Eli and Dave (sign language component). Eli enjoys helping Dave and I around the house. He has his own water can (my old one) and likes to carry it out to my raspberry and tomato plants to help me water them. Just this morning he and Dave finished putting a culvert ring in the fire pit. Eli’s feet have also grown by leaps and bounds this summer, in the spring he was still wearing a size 4 but now he comfortably wears a 7 and sometimes an 8. I think this is just an indication of how much shoe shopping we’ll be doing as he grows up.

Dave…has been keeping very busy at work. They have needed him to come in early many times this summer. Lots of deliveries needing to be made. Softball is now over, but his team did a great job and played well together. Eli and I didn’t make it to very many games due to times, the heat and other events going on. Dave has been very diligent about working on the house and has made some great progress. We (and by ‘we’, I mean Dave) have been making steady progress in getting things done around the house to make room for the baby. I’m excited about what is done and a little anxious about what still needs to be done (pray please!!). Dave has gotten some new musical gear and has been selling other musical gear. He has been ‘fine tuning’ one of his basses and has been enjoying every minute of that. I love my husband!

Me…I have thoroughly enjoyed my summer home with Eli. We’ve had lots of fun hanging out together, working around the house and yard, running errands, going for walks, etc. I used my one free day each week (Eli had to go to daycare one day a week to maintain our spot) to get homework done. I took a class this summer called ‘Environmental Education’ it was a requirement for my teaching license. I have no intentions of using the knowledge at all, but who knows, maybe it will come in handy one day. I head back to work full-time next week for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year. Part of me is excited to go back (because I love my job) but part of me is not looking forward to going back (because I love being home with Eli).

Gilbert…has steadily been growing, the doc says I’m on target for size and should be on target to deliver a nice size baby boy (not quite sure what this means). Gilbert has taken to waking up and moving a lot from 10-11pm and 5-6am. If he can have a sleep pattern like that when he’s born, I’d be alright with that.

Dave and I celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary on August 7th. We had a great weekend together, kidless (well, as kidless as we could be). Eli spent the weekend with Gramma and Grampa Paulson. They had all kinds of fun. Dave and I got a hotel room for Saturday night, ordered in pizza, went swimming and went to see a movie (we wanted to test out my new hearing aids in a theater). Sunday we did lots of house and yard work, it was a very productive day. Then we went out for a fancy dinner at Vic’s in Minneapolis. It was such wonderful food and a great experience. We took a little stroll down by the waterworks system as well, since it was right there. We also saw a beaver!

That’s our not so quick update.

Swim Lessons and Big Boy Bed

by Dave

Swim Lessons: Swim lessons went MUCH better this week! Eli was much more comfortable in the water and enjoyed being in the water. Eli enjoyed throwing various toys around the pool and ‘chasing’ them, kicking his legs, making splashes, attempting to blow bubbles and jump into the pool. One day we decided to be daring and dunked him. He came up out of the water with very wide eyes and a shocked look on his face, then he signed ‘more’. The swim instructor said to only do things three times before moving onto another activity, then you can come back to the former activities.

All in all, swim lessons were a success. Eli has advanced onto ‘Toddler B’ swim lessons, just need to get him signed up. The only downside to week two was the pool water was much colder, therefore by the end of the 25 minutes we had a very blue toddler on our hands (who loved to get wrapped up and snuggle for a few minutes after each lesson).  I had to explain to the swim instructor that Eli’s blueness was normal due to his heart condition, she was a bit concerned at first.

Big Boy Bed: On Monday, Eli and I decided to surprise Dave. My friend/coworker, Katie, came over to help take down Eli’s crib, rearrange his room and to together the twin bed. Eli was in the room with us the whole time and helped as much as he was able to do so. Once we got his room rearranged and the bed set up, Eli spent the next few minutes playing on his bed and getting acquainted with everything. He was quite pleased with how it looked.

The first night was interesting. Eli went to bed just fine but woke up around 2am and wouldn’t got back to bed for a very long time. He wanted to snuggle so I laid down in bed with him. He would snuggle and doze, then wake up and want to play for a minute or two, then he would snuggle again. Finally after 2.5 hours I just left him in bed alone, he cried for a few minutes and then fell asleep for the next 4.5 hours.  Needless to say, I took a nap later that day.

The next few days were uneventful, the only interesting things he did in bed were move around a lot. Up until yesterday, he hadn’t fallen out of bed or gotten out of bed on his own.  Yesterday he woke up from nap time and heard me moving around, he got out of bed, pounded on the door and yelled, “MOM” until I opened the door. Last night he fell out of bed but it didn’t wake him up. We heard him fall and ran into his room, Dave said he was still asleep until he picked him up. Wonder what would’ve happened if we left him alone. Today after nap time he found his wagon full of blocks and brought them over to the door, laid down in front of the door, stuck his hand under the door and yelled “MOM” until I came and got him.

All in all the transition was much easier than we expected which we were quite pleased with. Tomorrow night will be the first time he sleeps in a different bed, in a different house. Eli and I are going to Gramma and Grampa’s house.

Swim Lessons – Week One

by Dave

We started a toddler swimming class this week. The parent(s) are in the water with the toddler. Here’s a break down of how week one went for us…

Monday – Eli screamed and cried most of the time. I did get him to stop crying for a few minutes while we did some playing. I was getting a lot of pity looks from people. Dave did not come with to the class.

Tuesday – Dave came with us (lessons are in the morning before Dave has to work) and it went much better. Eli cried as soon as we entered the building, fussed as I got him ready to swim, whined as he got in the water with Dave and I, but was laughing within 5 minutes. Dave did a wonderful job of getting him comfortable and laughing. Eli had a much better day in the water.

Wednesday – Eli was happy the entire time. We played ball with the swim instructor and the other student. He had tons of fun hanging out with Dave and making faces at me. He kept signing ‘more please’ throughout the entire class. We all had a great time!

Thursday – Eli waltzed right into the building and headed toward the locker room. He claimed a locker for us, took off his shoes and hat, he needed help with his shirt. He scurried toward the pool door, as soon as we got into the pool area he babbled about the water and balls (there are toys to play with in the pool). I jumped in the pool and Eli insisted on taking the ladder into the pool. He kicked and swam, watched me blow bubbles, threw a ball around in the water for us to chase, put a floaty device on and swam only holding onto one of my fingers and giggled a lot. Eli was having fun until we went over to the landing. He was able to stand up on his down and the water was up to his chest. However, he was not happy. It was something new and different, he wasn’t comfortable with it. There was a lot of cry, screaming and clinging to me for the last few minutes of class. Dave wasn’t able to come with us today due to his work schedule.

Each day, Eli has fallen asleep on the way home from swim lessons. Apparently swimming tires him out! We have four more days of swim lessons next week. Hopefully we can have a great week and end the lessons on a good note.
