Backyard Camping Adventure

by Megan

Yesterday, we decided to go camping in the backyard. We want to take the boys camping but thought we should give it a “test run” first.

We ate our dinner outside on the deck. We had hotdogs, watermelon and chips. All very yummy! Oh, I guess I should mention that our hotdogs were wrapped in bacon. Yum!!!!! ;-)

Later, when the temps cooled down, we had a bonfire and roasted s’mores. The boys had fun staying up late and being outside. They especially enjoyed their glow sticks. Once it was dark enough, I gave them some glow sticks to play with. They were a hit!

Brothers hanging out. They had to sit next to each other for most of the night.

Enjoying some more freedom before bedtime. They loved the tent!

I had to take a picture of them when I came into the tent. Noah’s butt is in the air and Eli is all sprawled out.

Our neighbor, Dave (his wife is Megan – what are the odds?), came over and hung out with us for several hours. We had a good time chatting and getting to know him better. This was my view for a few hours. Serenity!!

Eli was awake kind of early, which was fine, we needed to go let out Riley (friend’s dog). I snapped this picture of Noah. Such a cutie!!!

One last picture before our camping adventure was over. The beautiful sun glistening off our tent.

My Garden

by Megan

Last year I planted a small garden, just to “test the waters” so to speak. I’ve always liked the idea of having a garden, but wasn’t sure if I would actually enjoy it. I grew up helping my parents tend to the garden(s) at their house. Anyway, I did enjoy gardening but was quite discouraged by the critters eating most of it before I could. The only thing that grew plentiful last year were the cherry tomatoes. All my carrots had the tips chewed off. Dang moles!

Anyway, this year I decided to go bigger and better! A neighbor friend had a big tiller on the back of his mower, so he came over and tilled up my garden. It was quite an adventure. I didn’t take any picture, though I should have. He had to haul out a huge rock and several other large sized rocks as well. We have lots of rocky soil in our area.

It took me an entire day to plant my garden. I planted: tomatoes, strawberries, radishes, green beans, green peppers, cucumbers, peas, carrots, onions, corn and cherry tomatoes. It was hard work, but lots of fun. I truly enjoyed “becoming one with nature”. ;-) Below are some pictures of my garden.

Here’s a very dirty me. This is what I looked like after all day of gardening. It’s messy work, but someone’s gotta do it.

Here is the finished product of the planting. I used sticks and string to identify where the rows are, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t pulling up plants while thinking they were weeds. It helped, a lot!! The zigzag wire thingy is for the peas to grow up.

A close up view of the green peppers, cucumbers, corn, peas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, onions and green beans. Yumminess!!!

A close up view of the tomatoes, strawberries, radishes and green beans.

Too keep out most of the critters Dave put up fence. I haven’t had anything eating my veggies…yet!! The deer haven’t attempted to jump the fence…yet. Dave does have a mole trap set up in the garden area, there has been evidence of moles but none of my veggies have been eaten yet. The trap has been tripped a few times, but nothing was caught.

A close up view of my growing yumminess! I hadn’t been able to weed it for a few weeks so it took me 3 days and a major sunburn to get it all done. As soon as all the weeds were gone the veggies started growing like crazy!! Well, that and all the rain we had one week helped too. ;-)

My first harvest!!! Blackberries (a fun surprise) and radishes. I’ve since picked radishes two more times. I need to plant more radishes here soon.

A few years ago, in the middle of the summer, I got some raspberry plants from a friend of mine. I planted them right away and got some raspberries later that fall. Due to transplanting them so late in the summer they didn’t produce fruit each year until late summer/early fall. However, this year due to the early and very warm spring we had, they are already producing fruit. Dave and I were out checking out the raspberry plants when we noticed a few feet away some more raspberries…or so we thought. Upon further investigation, we found an entire patch of blackberries growing in our brush. Oh my yumminess!!! We were/are so excited about the blackberries, they apparently haven’t produced anything until this year, otherwise we would’ve noticed them. Later that evening, Eli and I went out to clear out some of the brush to make it easier to access the blackberries. We picked a bowl full (which would’ve been fuller if Eli hadn’t eaten so many) and ate them with our supper. It was a fun surprise!!

Needless to say, I’m thoroughly enjoying my garden and gardening experience. I’ve gotten out a few more times to weed, I don’t need it to be an adventure like before, ugh! I can’t wait to eat more produce from my garden and relish the fact that I planted them, weeded them, sweated on them and picked them to share with friends and family. I’ll keep you posted on the final harvest and it’s yumminess!!

Silly Sleepers

by Megan

Lately, we’ve gotten some good pictures of our boys sleeping in silly positions. Here’s what we’ve accumulated thus far. Enjoy a good giggle!

Noah decided his head was cold.

Noah passed out after the Heartbeat 5000 5k Race. He was so tuckered out from watching people run and attempting to run away himself. ;-)

Here’s the top view…

Here’s the butt view.

Eli fell asleep holding his sippy cup in the air. It stayed there for about 3 minutes before his arm finally fell down.

Passed out baby in the car. It took him about 3 seconds to fall asleep.

Squished up baby. This does not look comfy, at all!

This is his “Drew Brees” pose.

He’s reverting back to his fetus days.

Tongue sticking out?!?!

I call this one “kicking his heels up”.

Every night Dave and/or I check on the boys before we go to bed. We generally have a good laugh about how they are sleeping. Enjoy our silly sleepers!

Holy crap, we ran a 5k!!!

by Megan

Today we ran our first ever 5k. We have participated in a 5k previously, but did not run, we walked. Today, we ran! Secretly, it has been on my bucket list for a few years to run a race of some sort. It made logical sense to start with a 5k because it is short, relatively speaking (if one can call 3.2 miles “short”). I’m so glad to say…IT’S DONE!!

We got to the race area and I was so amazed and overwhelmed by the number of people there. It was so busy and so packed. It was so amazing!!! I was blown away by the number of people who were supporting family and friends of individuals with congenital heart defects. The outpouring of love was so evident. It brought tears to my eyes. I hope next year we can get more family and friends to join the cause and be on our team. I’ll start recruiting now. ;-)

We were able to see Eli’s cardiologist, Dr. Rios. He came over and visited for a few minutes. We saw a few other nurses and doctors from Eli’s hospital stays and visits. Eli and I even got to connect with our favorite nurse, Christi. During the race, I even ran a few blocks with Dr. Rios. :-)We saw other families from Eli’s hospital stays and had a few quick moments to catch up with some of them.

A dear friend, Katie Saucier, joined our team and ran with us today. She had sweet baby Caleb just 4 months ago and was able to run a 5k today. Amazing!!! I was overwhelmed by her love and support. She loves my boys so much and it makes my heart so happy!

We started out running together, but I was very firm in my instructions to NOT wait for me, which they didn’t. ;-) I had a feeling I was going to get emotional today, I usually do at events like this. I was a little teary eyed in the beginning, feeling overwhelmed by all the people there. For awhile I could see Dave and Katie ahead of me, but eventually I lost them. At one point I caught up to Dave, we ran together for a bit (I got teary eyed again). Dave did some walking but was able to catch up to me again twice, goes to show that I was running really slow! Eventually Dave had to take a longer walk break and I kept going. I got onto the bridge and I knew the race was almost over. I felt an extra surge of energy and picked up the pace a bit. I got to the end and the time was 34 minutes but I think I’m under that due to being so far back at the start line. I’ll have to look at the final results in a few days. Anyway, as soon as I stopped running, I started crying. I found my Dad with the boys and bawled!! I completed my first 5k in honor of my sweet little man, Eli. Amazing!!! I ran the entire time. I was so overwhelmed and so proud of myself.

Eli’s cheesy grin on our way home from the race. He had fun today as well.

I’ve been encouraged and supported by so many friends. A dear friend from college, Greg Asplund, has been so supportive and encouraging of my training process. In the past year or so, he has become a runner (and a good one at that) and is so encouraging of those who are runners or wanting to become runners. Thanks Geg!!!

Here we are!! All hot and sweaty after our first 5k. So amazing! I love my husband and I’m so glad to have had his support during this adventure. I’m already looking forward to next year’s race. :-)

This little man is DJ. He is in one of my early childhood programs. Such a sweetheart!!

Summer Buzz

by Megan

We gave Eli his first summer buzz cut. Dave and Eli were in the tub while I cut his hair and Noah ran around causing a ruckus. The popsicle was his reward for doing a great job. He looks like such a little man!
